Care guide:

1. Choosing the Right Location

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade in hotter regions.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly alkaline pH.
  • Spacing: Space plants 2–3 metres apart for individual trees, or plant closer for hedges.

2. Planting Time

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May).

3. Preparing the Planting Site

  • Soil Preparation: Improve soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Digging the Hole: Dig a hole twice the width and depth of the root ball.

4. Planting

  • Plant Placement: Place the root ball level with the soil surface and backfill gently.
  • Support: Stake young trees to protect them from strong winds.

5. Watering and Fertilising

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first year to help the roots establish.
  • Fertilising: Use a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth.

6. Mulching and Maintenance

  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain shape or control size.

7. Pest and Disease Control

  • Pests: Watch for scale insects or aphids; treat if needed.
  • Diseases: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot or fungal issues.

8. Winter Care

  • Hardiness: Handles frost well but benefits from mulch around the base in colder regions.

9. Common Uses

  • Grown for its aromatic leaves used in cooking, as well as for hedging or as a feature tree.
